Raam - Laxman

Profession: Music Director, Bollywood.

Maine Pyar Kiya ravaged the box - office in the year 1989 , and its music was responsible the films success to a large degree. A composer duo in the form of Raam - Laxman was born with this musical hit.

Raam - Laxman’s Laxman's real name is Vijay Patil. He started his own orchestra named as Amar - Vijay (Amar was his son's name). The famous comedienne, Dada Kondke was impressed by him and approached him to compose the music for his Marathi comedy Pandu Hawaldar. Vijaywith his friend Raam, composed the music that went on to become a raging hit. And their alliance with Kondke did not break till the latter's death.

Shortly afterwards, Raam died tragically but Laxman retained Raam's name in both Marathi and Hindi films. Rajkumar Barjatya of Rajshri Productions offered Raam - Laxman his first Hindi film, Agent Vinod, which proved to be silver jubilee hit in 1974. Raamlaxman has since done almost 75 films in Hindi, Marathi and Bhojpuri. He created his own style well displayed by th emusical hit Maine Pyar Kiya in the year 1989.

His favourite singers were Shailendra Singh and Usha Mangeshkar. His favourite lyricist was the late Asad Bhopali with whom he had prepared quite a bank of songs that were never recorded. His releases were mostly with Ravindra Rawal, and only Anjaan and Indeevar did a film each with him among the big names.

Raamlaxman did work with loyalists like Dada Kondke , Pranlal Mehta , Deepak Bahry , and Rajshri Productions with whom hwe His Marathi films include ‘Goonche lage hai khilne’ and ‘Sultana sultana’ (Tarana), ‘Deva O Deva Ganapati Deva’ (Humse Badkar Kaun), ‘Saathi tera naam ek din’ (Ustadi Ustad Se), and his songs from Bezubaan.

In the year 1988,he got a major break with Sooraj Barjatya's Maine Pyar Kiya, one of the most successful films and musicals of the 80’s. Maine pyaar kiya also launched S.P. Balasubramaniam, a typical south Indian voice, now identifiable with the Bollywood heroes. Following this, Raamlaxman could do just one more film with Asad Bhopali, who succumbed to chronic alcoholism shortly afterwards.

He did films with Manmohan Desai, Mahesh Bhatt, G.P.Sippy, Anil Ganguly and others. The few songs that proved hits included ‘Kabhi Linking Road’ from Patthar Ke Phool, ‘Paigham De Rahi Hai’ (Anmol), a sly rework of Shankar Jaikishan’s Chori Chori classic ‘Yeh Raat Bheegi Bheegi’ and some tepid and transient numbers from 100 Days, Baharon Ki Manzil and Saatwan Aasman.

He scored a hit again with Hum Aapke Hain Kaun! (1994).His alliance with Sooraj continued and in Hum Saath Saath Hain, Raamlaxman proved himself by giving a good score but the scores were not hit except for a few numbers. His hits numbers include hits like ‘Dil deewana’, ‘Kabootar ja ja ja’, ‘Aaja shaam hone aaye’ and ‘Mere rang mein’, all from Maine Pyar Kiya and ‘Didi tera devar deewana’, ‘Joote de do’, ‘Chocolate, lime juice’ and ‘Maye na maye’ all from Hum Aapke Hain Kaun.
